Congress will consider whether a federal crop insurance program for poultry growers is feasible, according to an article by the News Journal, available here.

An amendment to the 2014 farm bill requires a report to Congress on whether a federal insurance program should be created to insure poultry growers “against business disruptions caused by integrator bankruptcy” or by “a catastrophic event.”

The amendment was added by Senators Chris Coons (D-DE) and Saxby Chambliss (R-GA).  Coons said, “Many other segments of agriculture benefit from crop insurance…Poultry’s something where there is no such product available.  There’s no federal role in provision for that.”  Coons continued, “We’re trying to encourage young folks to get into this segment.  We want to help them manage risk in a responsible way.”

Michael J. Brown, president of the National Chicken Council, said an insurance program could help growers “when their flocks are disrupted, whether it be by disease, by a weather event, or an economic event,” like the “bankruptcy of an integrator.”
