Hoosier Ag Today reports that the “American Farm Bureau Federation welcomes the emergency actions U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Monday to provide assistance to the farm and ranch families suffering from the drought.”

According to the article, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack is asking the crop insurance industry not to charge farmers interest on delayed premium payments as a result of the ongoing drought.
“Vilsack says crop insurance premiums are normally due on August 15th – and companies have been providing a grace period until September 30th.”

The article continues that if the 2012 Farm Bill is stopped, “a group of Senators is looking for a way to pay for emergency drought relief…If the legislation remains blocked, it’s expected a disaster relief companion will be introduced in the House soon.”
