The intersection of food safety and technology will be prominently featured at the upcoming 34th Annual Conference of the American Agricultural Law Association, the nation’s only professional organization serving the legal needs of agriculture. This year’s conference will be held in Madison, Wisconsin from October 31 through November 2, and will cover a diverse range of agricultural and food law topics.  And, one of those topics will be a panel, Food Safety and Technology.

The panel will be moderated by Drew L. Kershen, Earl Sneed Centennial Professor of Law, The University of Oklahoma College of Law.  The panel will include the following presentations and speakers:
  • A presentation by Shawn Stevens titled, “Safe Foods Requires More Than Wishful Thinking:  The Impact of the Food Modernization Act of 2010 and Technology on Food Safety”.  Mr. Stevens is an attorney with Gass Weber Mullins who dedicates his entire practice to representing the food industry, including some of the nation’s largest food producers, national restaurant chains, and several food distributors and grocers.   
  • “Raw Milk – The Legal, Regulatory and Police Debate in Wisconsin”, presented by William Oemichen, President/CEO, Cooperative Network. 
  • “Food Irradiation – Law, Regulation and Police for Food Safety”, presented by Drew L. Kershen, Earl Sneed Centennial Professor of Law, The University of Oklahoma College of Law.

The AALA welcomes attorneys, students, and other professionals interested in agricultural and food law.   This year’s conference will include updates on environmental law, food law, estate planning and tax issues, the farm bill, local food issues, federal crop insurance, and many others.
