Join us on March 27, 2024, for a webinar designed for students interested in issues and careers in agricultural and food law; the program is also appropriate for law faculty who advise law students. A law degree can provide entry into numerous careers beyond the traditional law practice. Some lawyers work in a traditional legal setting and then switch to non-practicing careers, while others enter law school intending to pursue a non-practicing job. Those jobs, for example, might include work in policy and government relations, advocacy work, or a state or government career.

This webinar will feature Kirstin Nelson, MLIS, J.D., Senior Law Librarian and Agricultural Law Information Partnership coordinator at the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Library. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland Carey School of Law, teaching legal research with a focus on ag and food law. She will discuss her career path from working as a law firm research librarian and legal analyst to her current USDA job. Kirstin will also highlight several other non-practicing career paths in the ag and food industry for those with law degrees.

You will hear:

Kirstin Nelson has over 20 years of experience as a law librarian in law firms, corporations, the federal government, and as an adjunct law professor at the University of Maryland Carey School of Law. She earned her master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and her Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore School of Law. She currently works at the USDA National Agricultural Library (NAL), where she coordinates the Agricultural Law Information Partnership between NAL, the National Agricultural Law Center, and the Center for Agriculture and Food Systems at Vermont Law and Graduate School. The Partnership supports agricultural and food law information dissemination to consumers, researchers, policymakers, and legal professionals. Kirstin recently worked a temporary detail in the USDA Office of the Secretary.
