Foreign Ownership of Ag Land: Federal & State Legislative and Litigation Update – National Agricultural Law Center

Foreign Ownership of Ag Land:

Federal & State Legislative and Litigation Update

You will learn:

In recent years, foreign investments in agricultural land have garnered significant attention at both the state and federal levels.  As of December 31, 2023, foreign persons reported holding an interest in almost 45 million acres of U.S. agricultural land, accounting for 3.5% of  all privately held U.S. agricultural land and about 2% of all U.S. land.  At the state level, approximately 30 states now have some type of restriction on certain nonresident aliens, foreign business entities, or foreign governments. These laws vary though there are some similarities.  In the past couple of years, several federal legislative proposals introduced in Congress as well as some legislative enactments, Executive Orders, and developments within USDA.   This webinar will update on state-level developments, developments regarding the Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act (AFIDA), relevant Executive Orders, key federal proposals and activity, and relevant litigation in the foreign investment space.
