Per the New York Times, consumers in New York and California filed a lawsuit April 29 against the Quaker Oats company after trace elements of the pesticide glyphosate were found in some oatmeal.

In the complaint, plaintiffs contend Quaker’s claims about its oatmeal are “false, deceptive and misleading.” According to the suit, glyphosate is used on Quaker’s oats as a weed killer and a drying agent. The suit states that Quaker’s use of the terms “Natural,” “100% Natural,” and “100% Natural,” among others, misrepresents the oatmeal product and omits critical information  for consumers.

According to the Lawyer Herald, Quaker contends they did not add glyphosate while milling the grains, but the carcinogen may have been applied by farmers before harvesting.
