Thirty-two Senators joined together to ask Labor Secretary Hilda Solis to give farmers and ranchers adequate time to comment on the proposed rule that would limit their ability to hire youth to work in agriculture.

On Sept. 2, the U.S. Department of Labor announced proposed changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act that could, among other provisions, prohibit children younger than 15 from working on a farm or ranch that is not directly owned by their parents. The public was initially given until Nov. 1 to submit comments on the proposal.

On Oct. 27, the Labor Department notified the senators that the comment period would be extended an additional 30 days.
