Farm Stress & Mental Health: Where Can You Turn?

Sarah Cato, Communications and Special Project Coordinator, National Agricultural Law Center
Grace Vehige, Communications Specialist, National Agricultural Law Center

Anna Mathis, Communications Specialist, National Agricultural Law Center

The U.S. Center for Disease control has ranked agricultural professions as having among the highest suicide rates across the country. Because of this, state cooperative extension services, departments of agriculture and other organizations have created mental health resources, such as stress management fact sheets, specifically for rural and farm families. Further, many states across the U.S. have state-specific helplines or mobile task force units designed to help individuals facing an emotional crisis, or even contemplating suicide, receive the help they need. The primary aim of this compilation is to connect individuals and families with state specific mental health resources and available contacts, as well as with resources both geared specifically toward farm and rural families and also for the general public.  Access this compilation Posted 8/4/20, updated 1/24/24.

Family Law Issues in Agriculture: Factsheet Series

Cari Rincker, Rincker Law PLLC

When farm and ranch families think of the Big D’s that can harm their agriculture operation they focus on Death and Destruction but oftentimes forget about Divorce.  Family law touches upon every socio-economic group and walk of life, including those involved food and agriculture and multi-generational farm families.  Every farm and ranch divorce is as diverse as each family itself but it can include complex legal issues that are unique to farmers and ranchers.  These fact sheets not only discuss legal issues for families going through these transitions (e.g., child support, spousal maintenance, equitable distribution/ community property, animal issues) but also addresses nuptial agreements and estate planning concerns.  This set of fact sheets also touches upon Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) choices, including mediation.  Because family law is highly state specific, these fact sheets address general issues.  Readers are cautioned to speak to an attorney licensed in their jurisdiction.
